T'ai Chi Ch'uan is an 'internal/soft' Chinese civilian defensive art system, long recognised for its benefits of promoting excellent health, relaxation, invigoration and rejuvenation.

T'ai Chi Ch'uan, as taught by the T'ai Chi Institute of Health under the auspices of the Wu-Shin Chi-Dao Foundation for Self-Development, follows a traditional 'tried-and-tested' curriculum of training and development - moving progressively through a concentration on the external movements to a concentration on the internal factors of the art. We are horrified by, and intensely critical of, the growing trend of 'weekend specialists/experts' who begin teaching this deep and complex art (essentially teaching a choreographed sequence only) without the appropriate and necessary lengthy period of apprenticeship under a qualified teacher.

While Wu-Shin T'ai Chi Ch'uan is, in reality, a 'soft' defensive art for mature men and women, it is taught and practised largely as a series of precise but slow-flowing movements and postures more for the many health and relaxation benefits than for self-defence. However, the defensive themes, the effective understanding of energy mobilisation, and the various applications are explained in order to promote an appreciation of the form and its functionality; but these are not practised in drill format.

Our Wu-Shin T'ai Chi Ch'uan offers a gentle form of isometric exercise (with no jarring like you would experience in running or aerobics) that can be regulated to your own physical condition. It is the perfect exercise for young and old alike, which, under our caring personal guidance, increases your strength and flexibility naturally and gently. Wu-Shin T'ai Chi Ch'uan is taught to a background of soothing music and concentrates on achieving personal tranquility and de-stressing with slow, deep breathing leading naturally to improved health and increased longevity. When practiced regularly, T'ai Chi Ch'uan is the most effective form of 'internal cleansing' available.

Wu-Shin T'ai Chi Ch'uan is also considered to be an excellent practise of 'mediation in motion'; it brings a deep sense of inner peace and well-being after only a short period of appropriate study. We teach the original Yang Style Long Form of T'ai Chi Ch'uan (108 moves) of Yang Chen-Fu and place great emphasis on developing a deep understanding of the nature and expression of the art.

Our syllabus includes the study of Tui Shou and San Shou at appropriate levels aiding the understanding of the 'defensive themes' of T'ai Chi Ch'uan.

Classes are available at our Hombu dojo at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays.

STUDENT ELIGIBILITY: Minimum age - 16 years.
